How we simplified the workflow of operating a laser cutter

We created a simplified workflow when operating a laser cutter through redesigning the user interface.

We began by identifying existing issues in the old interface, and mapping out the workflow to analyse the rate of productivity.

We worked to reduce cognitive load as well, minimising additional features that were used less frequently.

The redesigned interface speeds up productivity for users with the streamlined workflow provided.

Looking at the existing GUI.

The main page lacks visual hierarchy. The user does not know where to begin. The screen looks cluttered, not making it intuitive for novice users. Too many colour options for layer colours can be overwhelming as well.

The settings screen lacks visual hierarchy. There is no specific order to carry out actions.
The preview screen lacks visual hierarchy as well. The user's gaze will automatically be drawn to the black screen rather than the actual time elapsed. Information on the right panel is overloaded.

The redesigned interface.

The main page has reduced significant visual weight - with better indications of visual hierarchy, attention drawn to the call to action buttons.

The preview screen, similar to the main page, has a simpler and intuitive layout, and clearer call to action buttons.

The settings screen is now segmented - main settings and advanced settings accessed through different tabs.
